The Shiawassee Flats citizens and Hunters Association was founded
in 1985 as a chapter 501c non-profit organization. Through 2005
we have provided over $500,000 in direct cash contributions and
“sweat equity” to wildlife habitat projects on both
the state and federal lands known collectively as the Shiawassee
Flats. We have sought partners such as Michigan Wildlife Habitat
Foundation, Michigan Duck Hunters Association, NAWCA, and Ducks
Unlimited who have frequently provided matching contributions. By
leveraging our funds in this manner, over $2,000,000 in wetland
acquisitions and restoration projects have been completed on public
lands within the Shiawassee Flats.
1)
WAHL ROAD NORTH DIKE RESTORATION- Repaired the dike breech
and installed a rip rapped spillway section on the north dike. Water
control was returned to the marsh unit and it now provides excellent
hemi marsh habitat.
2)
B-1 PUMP DRIVE AND SUMP DIKE- Provided a 75 hp electric
motor and controls to drive a new pump installation as part of a
new sump dike. This project provides independent water management
of 1-5, 6-8, 9-14, and the Wahl road marsh units.
3)
POOL 2 (SNWR) DIKE RESTORATION- Donated $5,000 for purchase
of filter cloth and rip rap to repair the breeched dike on the federal
refuge. Water control was re-established to the pool 2 marsh unit.
4)
DIKE MAINTENANCE EQUIPMENT- Purchased a side-mount
bush hog for use in maintaining SRSGA dikes and ditches.
5)
30s (old 20s) PUMP UPGRADES- Provided funding for several
pump renovations including a new pump, new clutch, and relocation
of the pump site to the NW corner site.
6)
FLOODED
WOODS POTHOLES- Funded rental and fuel for a low pressure
dozer to create numerous potholes in both the east and west sides
of the flooded woods unit. This project offset some of the lost
habitat due to purple loosestrife encroachment and greatly improved
moist soil plant growth.
7)
PRIOR ROAD REFUGE LOW HEAD DIKES- Funded construction of
two low head cross dikes in the Prior road refuge units to enhance
water management capability. Major habitat improvements occurred
due to optimum flooding conditions.
8)
ROOKERY PUMP UNIT- Funded purchase and installation of
a pump unit to provide water control for the rookery unit. Previous
to this project, the only means of flooding was backflow form the
woods unit while at maximum pool condition.
9)
TAGGET TRACT WETLAND RESTORATION- Funded dike construction
and water control structure for the 70 acre wetland and adjacent
nesting meadow.
10)
SPENCER ROAD WETLAND RESTORATIONS- Funded dike construction
and water control structures for multiple small wetlands.
11)
WAHL ROAD WETLAND RESTORATION- Funded dike construction
and water control structure for the 20 acre wetland and associated
nesting meadow.
12)
McCLURE TRACT WETLAND RESTORATION- Funded dike construction
and water control structure for the 5 acre wetland.
13)
PRIOR ROAD WETLAND COMPLEX- Funded dike construction for
a 30 acre wetland complex.
14)
ZONE 29 MARSH RESTORATION- Cleared existing dikes of woody
vegetation and funded dike reconstruction with spillways for conversion
of the zone 29 unit to a hemi marsh.
